English teacher

Point Pleasant Borough High School

1. What are some past jobs/positions you have held?

Thanks to my experience at TCNJ I was able to secure my teaching position two weeks prior to graduation, so this has been the only job I have had since graduating.

2. Were there any particular TCNJ courses/internships that helped jump-start your career?

Student teaching was invaluable to my career, as was Methods of Teaching English which really helped me understand the elements of good teaching.

3. What are the most important skills you learned that you use today?

Time management was a major skill I learned at TCNJ.  Without it, there is no way I would’ve gotten through my student teaching experience nor would I be successful in my current teaching position. Through my education courses, I also learned how to really look at a lesson and determine its value and purpose which has been vital to my teaching.

4. Do you have any advice for current TCNJ students trying to break into teaching?

Don’t be afraid to be yourself as a teacher and stick to your beliefs/principles. People will know if you are trying to be someone/something that you are not and it will not serve you well if you take a job somewhere that you do not feel comfortable.
